I love this video and I keep coming back to it. It is a worthy tribute to the show and the writing, but also are marvellous insight into the use of motifs in art. I wonder if you agree with me however, that this is only half the story of this specific motif. Wait for it' evoking Burr's tendency to hesitate is one side of the coin but on the other where we have Hamilton's tendency to act we also find the motif in the form of 'just you wait'. Arguably of course these are separate perhaps interweaving motifs, but I think the contrast between Hamilton's drive to shape the world around him to Burr's patience to see where he can best fit into the world are more interestingly taken together around the word 'wait', write up to the juxtaposition at the end where Hamilton waits and Burr does not.

Back when the video just released, I was just 11yo who had just discovered the Internet. At that time, I wasn't as fluent in English as I am now, and I knew basically nothing about America. The first time I saw the video, it gave me this feeling of indescribable oddity that made it confusing. It's like everything in the video to me seem like it just can't be described. Now that I rewatched the video again, it made me realise the true question of the video: "What is America to you?"

I'd also argue the use of the words orphan and immigrant are motifs that help us sympathise with Hamilton and why he has the ideals he has

The fourth "Wait for It" at the end of Hurricane by the ensemble is cut off. It's like how Hamilton doesn't listen to Burr's advice, that distrust he probably feels since Burr is also the person who put in him in this situation. By cutting off the "Wait for it" its establishing that Hamilton is still an opportunistic person. This also ends up linking to "We Know". Burr is the tipping point; Burr is the reason for Hamilton's downfall, yet he's desperate to stop Hamilton from effectively digging his own grave. But regardless it's hypocritical for Hamilton to listen to his advice. This also links to another motif in Hamilton; Macbeth. Hamilton is Macbeth, and its reflected most importantly in "Take a Break". Hamilton thinks Jefferson is Macduff, he thinks that Jefferson will be the cause of his downfall. In Macbeth, he doesn't suspect Macduff until the end of the story. Like how Burr (who is truly Macduff) isn't seen as the reason of Hamilton's downfall until the final half of the second act. Also, Burr is there during "Say No to This". Foreshadowing that Burr would be the true cause of Hamilton's downfall! (Also, love the technical motif in this video with the colour of Burgundy, Teal and Brown)

one of my favourite sections in the entire musical is the violin at the end of take a break, because while it is hauntingly beautiful, it follows a slightly altered version of the satisfied instrumentals - foreshadowing his affair as detailed in say no to this, as hamilton will never be satisfied. it took me a while to work out which song it was referencing. initially i thought it was that would be enough, which perhaps it does with the violin in a way, showing how simply coming with them would’ve been enough for him to be with eliza, once again.

Did anyone else notice that John Laurens’ last line is Hamilton’s line in The story of Tonight and vice versa for Hamilton. Their last thoughts are of each other. Hamilton’s death is often considered a suicide because he was goading Burr to shoot him the entire time and purposely making Burr want to shoot/kill him.

Thanks a lot for this video. I just got to know this masterpiece and I am consuming it, watching and listening to it all day long. There’s also another motif which I love that evolves and has a completely different flavour in two different songs, and it is “why do you write like you’re running out of time”. It is sang by Burr (and ensemble) during Non Stop, while Hamilton writes the assays for the the foundation of the US and the constitution…. And then sang by Eliza while Hamilton is writing her a letter before being killed…. 😭 Thanks again this was very instructive!

I know this is like 3 years too late at this point, but I have to point out that at 9:31 there was a pretty big editing error, because the video clip that's being played isn't from _Non-Stop,_ it's from _My Shot._ And it's definitely not intentional, because before that bit plays he tells us to pay attention to the background singers during that piece from _Non-Stop,_ which is literally impossible for us to do because the clip isn't showing that song there. Anyway doesn't really matter I guess at this point does it? Lmao I'm just surprised that no one seemed to catch it before now in the comments, at least not that I could see
